White-water rafting on a river in Bali

White-Water Rafting

Paddle through lush jungle gorges on one of Bali's beautiful rivers.

🕒 Half day (about 4–5 hours including transfer)💵 From around $30–45 per person, usually including gear, a guide and lunch.

White-water rafting on the Ayung River (near Ubud) or the wilder Telaga Waja in the east is one of Bali's most fun half-day adventures — gentle enough for first-timers and families, with rapids, waterfalls and jungle scenery along the way.

After a short safety briefing you'll spend roughly two hours on the water with a trained guide steering your raft. The Ayung is the gentler, scenic option near Ubud; the Telaga Waja has livelier rapids. Both are stunning.

Awan drives you to the starting point, waits during your rafting, and takes you back — so there's no logistics to worry about. Bring a change of clothes; you will get wet.

Highlights

  • Class II–III rapids — fun but beginner-friendly
  • Jungle gorges, waterfalls and carved rock cliffs
  • Professional rafting guide and all safety gear included
  • Usually includes a buffet lunch and shower facilities

Good to know

  • Suitable for most ages (operators usually require ages ~7+).
  • Wear clothes you don't mind soaking; bring a towel and dry change.
  • Lockers are available for valuables at the rafting base.

Is white-water rafting in Bali good for beginners and families?

Yes. Bali's two main rafting rivers are graded Class II-III, which means lively, splashy rapids with calm stretches in between rather than serious whitewater. No experience is needed: you raft in a stable inflatable with a trained local guide steering and calling paddle commands, and a safety briefing covers everything before you start. It suits first-timers, couples, friends and families with older children.

The two classic options are the Ayung River near Ubud (gentler, the most popular choice, surrounded by jungle and carved cliff walls) and the Telaga Waja River in East Bali (faster, wilder, with a higher final drop). Both run year-round, fed by Bali's mountains.

Ayung River vs Telaga Waja - which should you choose?

The Ayung, just outside Ubud, is the easier and more scenic of the two. Expect about 2 hours and roughly 9-12 km on the water, with gentle Class II-III rapids, lush gorge scenery and hand-carved stone reliefs along one cliff section. It's the better pick for families, nervous first-timers and anyone who wants beauty over adrenaline.

The Telaga Waja, near Mount Agung in the east, is faster and more continuous, with more committing Class III rapids and a notable drop near the end (a small artificial dam, around 3-4 metres - approximate). It's better for thrill-seekers and groups who've rafted before. It's also farther from the main tourist areas, so allow more driving time.

  • Ayung (Ubud): gentler, most scenic, best for families and beginners; close to Ubud
  • Telaga Waja (East Bali): wilder, more continuous rapids and a bigger final drop; longer transfer
  • Both: Class II-III, professional guide per raft, year-round

What's included and what a trip looks like step by step

A standard rafting package includes the raft, guide, all safety gear, a welcome drink, and usually a buffet lunch and a shower/changing room at the finish. Many operators also include hotel-area transfers, though with a private driver you simply arrive at the start point.

After checking in and the safety briefing, you walk down a long flight of steps to the river (often a few hundred steps - this is the most tiring part). You'll paddle for roughly 2 hours with stops to enjoy waterfalls and the gorge, then climb out, shower, change and eat lunch before heading on.

  • Helmet, life jacket (PFD) and paddle
  • Trained river guide in every raft
  • Welcome drink and post-raft buffet lunch (most operators)
  • Showers, lockers and changing rooms at the finish
  • Often: bottled water and basic transfers

What to bring and wear

You will get completely soaked, so dress for it. Wear quick-dry clothes and secure footwear, and bring a full change of dry clothes for afterwards. Leave valuables behind or use the operator's lockers.

  • Quick-dry shorts/shirt or swimwear; avoid cotton and loose flip-flops
  • Strapped sandals, water shoes or old trainers you don't mind soaking
  • A full set of dry clothes and a towel for after
  • Sunscreen and a small amount of cash for tips, lockers or photos
  • A waterproof phone pouch or GoPro with a wrist strap if you want photos; otherwise leave the phone in a locker
  • Glasses strap if you wear glasses

Safety, fitness and who should skip it

Rafting here is well-managed: reputable operators provide certified guides, maintained equipment and a thorough briefing, and Class II-III water is forgiving. The real physical demand is the staircase down to and back up from the river, plus the paddling itself.

It suits most people with reasonable mobility. Operators commonly set a minimum age (often around 7-9 years - approximate, varies by operator) and ask about pregnancy, heart conditions, recent surgery and serious knee or back problems. If the stairs would be a struggle or you can't swim and feel anxious in water, weigh that up - though life jackets are always worn.

Best time of day and season

Morning departures are the most popular: cooler air, calmer crowds and you finish around lunch with the afternoon free. Rafting runs all year. Water levels are higher and rapids livelier in the wet season (roughly November to March), which can mean a faster ride, while the dry season (roughly April to October) brings clearer water and more reliable weather.

Brief rain doesn't stop trips - you're already wet - but operators may delay or adjust if water levels are unsafe after heavy storms.

How long it takes and how it fits a private-driver day

Plan on a half-day overall: about 2 hours on the water, plus check-in, the walk down, lunch and showering, totalling roughly 3-4 hours at the site, before transfer time. From Ubud the Ayung put-in is very close; the Telaga Waja from southern Bali or Ubud is a longer drive.

With Black Pepper Bali Tours, Awan drops you at the rafting base, waits or runs a nearby errand, and is there dry and ready when you finish - so you can pair a morning raft on the Ayung with Ubud's rice terraces or a temple in the afternoon without juggling shuttle schedules.
